Note: I feel like all my Karen Witemeyer book reviews should have a PSA warning because I'm a tremendous fan of this author and it's pretty much impossible for me not to be bias. That being said I hope you enjoy this book review.
This captivating story delivers all the elements readers have come to love and expect from this beloved author, and then some . And let me just say what a total triumph and I hope will not be her last. So buckle up, or should I say, "Saddle up," and get ready for a page-turning journey that'll have you cheering for the heroine, swooning over the hero, and smiling and laughing at every turn. No really, I was. This is absolutely at the top of my read again pile!
I read In Her Sights in one sitting and couldn't stop smiling and laughing throughout the entire story.
Having read every single one of her books (some of them more than once) I was so excited at the idea of this book. Ms. Witemeyer takes two minor characters from her debut book, Tailor-Made Bride's Tessa James and Jackson Spivey from Stealing the Preacher and gives readers their love story. Talk about a fun and unique premise for readers who have read and followed Karen throughout all of her books. I felt like In Her Sights was in some way a 'thank you' from Ms. Witemeyer to her readers.
Jackson Spivey is an outsider in the town because of his father's reputation for being a dunk and a gambler. Despite his tough exterior and vow to never fall in love, Jackson Spivey can't resist the charm of Tessa James. But with a reputation tarnished by his father's actions and the town's disapproval, Jackson has been burned before and has no interest in courting Tessa.
I appreciated that the author doesn't shy away from tackling challenging topics such as seeing past a person's background. Because of his father's past Jackson feels unworthy of Tessa's love. Both Tessa and Jackson come from homes with absentee parents. In Jackson's case his father wasn't around often and he basically raised himself. In Tessa's situation her widowed mother worked hard to provide for Tessa and her siblings. Despite their difficult upbringings, Jackson and Tessa have become caring and hard-working adults not prone to bitterness over their upbringing. They are grateful for the mentors that God put in their lives to encourage and guide them...Crockett in Jackson's life (Character from Stealing the Preacher) and Hannah in Tessa's (Character from Tailor-Made Bride).
As Tessa and Jackson navigate their feelings for each other and the threats that come their way, readers will be on the edge of their seats. I loved that Tessa's character isn't one to give up easily. Desperate to win Jackson's heart, she seeks out lessons from the legendary Annie Oakley to improve her shooting skills and catch Jackson's eye. Armed with a custom pistol, Tessa finally has a chance to prove herself to Jackson, but danger lurks around the corner.
Tessa sees past Jackson's past and sees him for the diligent, God-fearing man that he is. Tessa teaches us to look at a person's character and heart and not judge a person by their background.
If you love being reunited with former characters from previous books, Karen doesn't disappoint and has characters from both Tailor-Made Bride and Stealing the Preacher are sprinkled throughout In Her Sights. Don't miss out on this thrilling novella that will have you rooting for Tessa and Jackson until the very end!
You will be glad you read what is sure to become an instant classic!
